The Rev. Dr. Ginger Barfield
Associate Dean, School of Theology
Dr. Barfield has served as Dean since 2009, and has served in various roles at the seminary, including a professor of New Testament and Greek, since 2003.
Before coming to Southern Seminary, Dr. Barfield taught at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC and at the University of North Carolina. She served Kathwood Baptist Church in Columbia as Associate Pastor and Minister of Education and was on the ministerial staff at St. John's Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC.
Dr. Barfield holds a B.S. from Winthrop College, a M.Div. from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and received her Ph.D. from Duke University.
In addition to being the Dean and teaching, Dr. Barfield wears many hats around the seminary campus, from helping students with financial aid to directing the Baptist Studies Program. When she has a moment to get away from the seminary she enjoys going to the beach, playing golf, and watching basketball. She also volunteers as a mentor for Richland I School District at-risk youth and Habitat for Humanity.
At the October 2008 meeting of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Barfield was appointed to serve as the Dean of the seminary, beginning on July 1, 2009. Following the seminary's merger with Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory, NC, in July 2012, she became the Associate Dean of the School of Theology, a new school of the university which is anchored by the seminary in Columiba, SC.
